We’ve all been in those homes where certain rooms feel too small, and the sensation of being cramped makes us want to leave as quickly as we can. A room may be small, but that doesn’t mean it has to feel confining, and proper lighting design can go a long way in making the space feel bigger than it actually is. At Passion Lighting in Grapevine, we love helping people transform the rooms in their homes, no matter what the dimensions are.
Light fixtures can take up a lot of real estate in the room (especially on the ceiling) and if you have a flush or semi-flush light, it can make the room feel smaller simply by where it is placed. If the ceilings are only eight to nine feet tall, consider adding recessed lighting. You don’t have to get rid of the main fixture, but you could pick a smaller light and complement it with new recessed options. They don’t take up any space and there will be more light in the room!
Spread Out the Light
Recessed fixtures will add more light to the room, and you’ll want to be sure that light is spread out across the entire space. A single fixture in the middle of a room can make the space feel small, and adding lamps and other light sources will brighten the room, making it feel bigger. Adding a wall sconce here and there can draw the eye up and create a vertical line that gives the illusion that the room is larger than it actually is. There are plenty of options to try, and our team is always happy to discuss them with you!
Mirrors on the Wall
We use mirrors every day, but they’re often relegated to our bathrooms and bedrooms. A small room that has good natural light can be made to feel bigger with a well-placed mirror on the wall. The mirror will bounce both natural and artificial light around the room, which can help eliminate dark corners and unwanted shadows.
Glass Decor and Furniture
If you have lots of furniture in a small room, consider paring down your pieces to only the essentials. If you have a solid coffee table, consider replacing it with a glass-top table so that the light can pass through it. The same is true for your decor – light-colored and glass accents will reflect and refract light, giving the space a brighter ambiance.
If you have a room in your house that you want to update so it feels bigger, think first about what type of lighting the space has. If you want to switch out some fixtures or add some recessed lights, come to Passion today and we’ll help you find the perfect options. We can also help you with some of the design aspects, and when you’re finished, the room will feel ten times as big!
